The Story of Jake's

In November, 2019..... A Harwich Port favorite is gearing up to host their 25th Anniversary Celebration. Jake Rooney’s Restaurant on the corner of Brooks road and Route 28 has been a local favorite since Peter Klaus purchased it in 1994.

The name “Jake Rooney” is a tribute to his mom (a Rooney) and his Dad’s middle name (Jake). Klaus wanted the name to honor his parents who had wanted Klaus’ dreams of restaurant ownership to come to fruition. The hunch paid off with his 24/7 work and passion for the people on Cape Cod; every time the door swings open at Jake Rooney’s, Peter reflects on his parents.

Chef Arthur Anderson sports a chef jacket every day—a testament to what he loves to do. He’s been with Klaus since the beginning. But what keeps bubbling to the top of his 25-year celebrated pot? The signature Lobster Stew—crowned with creamed sherry and a generous portion of sweet lobster.

Stonegrill made its debut at Jake’s nine years ago, and the hot volcanic stone has never left. Who would have thought dining with veils of steam would still be the go-to? Chef Arthur’s succulent shrimp, tender fillets and the juiciest prime rib on a hot platter with a little fat—a locked in, healthier flavor renders sizzling dishes even for those patrons with a finicky palate.

With Peter’s keen eye, it made good sense for his daughter Kate to carry the torch for the next 25 years. Kate is well poised to take over the helm: she’s business savvy and blessed with an entertainer’s eye. Don’t be surprised to see her up on the stage signing with New England’s legendary “Kings of Cape Cod,” John Morgan.

With a quarter century of serving people under their belt, Klaus reflects on the early days. “This used to be Bobby Byrnes and The Chuckwagon, two local restaurants that served the best burgers and beer in town,” says Peter. But beer and burgers quickly went by the wayside with Jake Rooney’s outstanding steaks, lobsters and local seafood accented by two large dining areas, a dance floor and a bar scene filled with far more than beer. Whether it’s Paint Nite, Disco Dancing, Trivia or family-style dining, they’ll serve whatever your heart desires.

So, when Peter looks back on his restaurant’s success, what does he remember most? “The patrons and Paula Champagne from the Town of Harwich,” says Peter, “although she retired.” “Without any of them, we wouldn’t be here.” I can’t thank the Town enough for the help they gave us during the buildout. Once we opened, we never looked back.” The patrons came. They filled the bar. Then all the tables.  Klaus always concentrated on making everyone feel welcome. “We’ve made life-long friends who started as customers.” Many of the patrons say it has a “Cheers” quality to it, where everyone knows your name.

From dining to dancing or just dabbling in good causes, their doors open wide every day. The Klaus’ built a warm, welcoming door, richly steeped in Cape Cod tradition.
